ACTION ALERT! Senate Blocks the SAVE Act — A Win for Voters... for Now

Published on 5/8/2026
In a significant victory for voting rights, the U.S. Senate adjourned in March without passing the SAVE Act, a bill that would have imposed strict documentary proof-of-citizenship requirements to register to vote, making it especially hard for women, gender atypical, and lower income citizens to vote. After two weeks of open debate, the bill failed to advance — thanks in large part to at least 38 Senators who delivered speeches on the Senate floor strongly opposing the measure.

The League of Women Voters joined pro-democracy advocates nationwide in opposing the SAVE Act, which we believe would create unnecessary barriers to voter registration and suppress access to the ballot box.

While the SAVE Act could return to the Senate floor later this year, this outcome demonstrates that sustained, organized advocacy works. The League of Women Voters of the US is asking supporters to thank their Senator if they stood up against this bill.
